The head of Germany’s office for migration and refugees says that up to 300,000 more refugees could arrive in Germany this year.
Frank-Jurgen Weise told the country’s Bild newspaper that 390-thousand people applied for asylum protection in the first six months of 2016.
The minister said the migration and refugee office would struggle to cope if more people came to the country.
Half of Germans would oppose a fourth term for Angela Merkel. That’s according to a new poll by Deutsche Welle that comes amid heavy criticism for the chancellor’s “open door” refugee policy.
Germans will head to the polls by October 2017 to elect a new federal government. Ms. Merkel, who has been in office since 2005 at the head of the conservative CDU party, is currently serving a third four-year term, this time in coalition with the left-leaning Social Democrats.
Last year, more than a million people from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa arrived in Germany. Most entered Europe through Greece .. and Italy, which is now on the ‘frontline’ of Europe’s refugee crisis.
